Dried food products such as flour, cereal, dried fruits, pasta, and grains are susceptible to contamination by pests. Facilities that produce, process, handle, or sell these products are at risk of infestation by stored product insects. These pests can quickly attack dried foods in processing plants and warehouses, causing significant damage to the products.

History

Pest heat treatment is a time-tested method with over 100 years of proven effectiveness in eradicating pests from mills and facilities. Known as “green heat treatment,” this process is chemical-free, making it an eco-friendly solution. Additionally, it offers a high level of efficacy in eliminating pests.

Heat treatment is an effective method for eliminating all life stages of insects and pests, from eggs to adults. This chemical-free, safe, and highly efficient alternative is gaining popularity, especially as fumigants like methyl bromide and other toxic chemicals are being phased out due to their harmful effects on people, pets, and the environment. Furthermore, chemical pesticides are becoming less effective as pests develop resistance to commonly used treatments.

The heat treatment process involves raising the temperature in an infested area to levels lethal to insects. Unlike chemicals and fumigants, heat can penetrate areas that are hard to reach, ensuring a more thorough and long-lasting solution. To effectively eradicate pests, the temperature must be raised to a minimum of 55°C, which is maintained for 24 hours to ensure that the thermal mass of structures is sufficiently heated to destroy all stored product insects.

This method targets specific areas of infestation, allowing the rest of the facility to continue operating without disruption. Spot or localized heat treatment is ideal for export containers, bins, silos, and other targeted areas.
